Card tray
This porcelain card tray, with a very stylised border of shells is decorated with a view of the new Houses of Parliament. The building designed by Charles Barry (1795-1860) is viewed here from the south-west. The Speaker's Tower (later known as the Clock Tower) at the far north-east corner was given a clock (Big Ben) surmounted by a spire, and the Victoria Tower at the north-west corner was raised in height.
The card tray was made by Chamberlain & Company at the Worcester porcelain works. Its elaborate, three dimensional shell border reflects mid Victorian fashionable taste.
