Tea cup and saucer, commemorative tea cup and saucer
Teacup and saucer produced by William Lowe to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Gilt rimmed, glazed white earthenware teacup with applied and raised gilt and colour decoration. In the centre is a cartouche surmounted by the imperial crown and flanked by flags, flowers and standards inscribed 'To commemorate the 60 years reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria June 20th 1897'. Above is an elephant representing Queen Victoria's role as Empress of India . Below is inscribed 'Queen of an Empire on which the sun never sets'. The saucer has similar flag and crown decoration but is only inscribed with the dates 1837-1897.
