Printed Ephemera — 1898
Won't Nobody Employ Me
Sheet music for the music hall song 'Won't Nobody Employ Me' popularised by the singer Louie Freear. The colour chromolithographed cover by the lithographer H.G Banks includes a portrait of Louie Freear dressed in a red skirt and black jacket. This song, written by B Soane Roby with music by William F Closs, poignantly refers to a young woman's search for a job with the chorus 'Won't nobody employ me as a servant, a nursmaid or a somefink of that kind.' Similarly to other popular music hall songs the lyrics of this song were aimed at the working class audiences who flocked to the music hall many of whom could relate to the plight of the young woman in the song.
