Social History — 1858
Sculpture
This iron ram's head was made by the popular Victorian sculptor John Bell. It is one of a series of animal heads Bell made for the Metropolitan Cattle Market at Islington which opened in 1855. The heads decorated the central rail of each livestock pen.
A native of Norfolk, Bell moved to London in 1827 and enjoyed a long and successful career in which he won commissions from the royal family, the government and the military. He is perhaps best known for his sculpture representing the American continent on the base of the Albert Memorial at Kensington. Another famous work, the Eagle Slayer, appeared at the 1851 Great Exhibition. Bell also sculpted for the Minton ceramics firm based in Stoke-on-Trent.
