Social History — 1939-1945
Bracelet
Chromium plated identification bracelet with St Christopher charm and linked chain. In the centre is an oval plaque that would have been engraved with personal details of the wearer, such as name and address. The bracelet is adjustable and can be worn by both children and adults. This unused example is still attached to its original card packaging printed with the heading 'ARP Identification wristlet as recommended by the civil defence leaflet'. Bomb injuries suffered by Londoners during World War II often made identification of casualties extremely difficult. The authorities suggested civilians wear such metal identification tags, to enable easier identification of the dead and seriously injured.
