Fashion — C. 1909
Badge, prisoner's badge
This badge formed part of a replica prison costume worn by an ex-suffragette prisoner at demonstrations and fund raising events. The numbers represent the prison wing and cell number occupied by the wearer. The number on this badge does not correspond to a wing or cell block in Holloway Prison. It is like, therefore, to have been made and worn by a Suffragette who served a term of imprisonment in another prison such as Winson Green in Birmingham.
In 1909 an exhibit entitled 'Prison Life' formed part of the Women's Exhibition held at Princes Skating Rink. The exhibit included a replica prison cell 'peopled' by Suffragettes dressed in replica prison clothing and taking part in prison activities such as sewing.
