Printed Ephemera — 1857
Toy theatre
The printer, bookbinder, stationer and toy theatre publisher John Redington first produced this large toy theatre in 1857. The wooden theatre is covered with a printed proscenium arch and orchestra pit and has six tin footlights. The lady in the top right box is holding a playbill announcing the pantomime Seesaw Margery Daw, first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre in December 1856. The theatre also includes tin holders for the characters.
