Working History — C. 1860
Clock
This eight-day regulator clock was displayed by W. Davis & Sons of 84 King William Street, London at the London International Exhibition of 1862. The exhibition was held in a large brick and iron building facing Cromwell Road. The Natural History Museum now stands on the site.
The clock shows the time in London (Greenwich Mean Time) in hours, minutes and seconds. It also records the date and month as well as mean solar time. In addition, it has eight 24-hour dials (in two series of 12 hours) which simultaneously give the time in eight other cities, Sydney, Madras, New York, Canton, Calcutta, Paris, St Petersburg and Constantinople.
The clock has a large compensating pendulum and a Graham's dead beat escapement with no recoil. The dials are supported by symbolic figures and emblems in bronze. The upright case is made of mahogany with satinwood banding. The front plate glass door is supported in large brass frame with a reflecting mirror behind the clock.
