Ticket
Ivory ticket of admission to Astley's Royal Amphitheatre in Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth. The ticket admits two to a box hired in the name of J James and would have been valid for repeat admissions to the circus throughout the season. One one side is marked 'admit two box' on the reverse is the holder's name 'J James'. Astley's combined the theatre with the circus and was most famous for spectacular equestrian performances. The ticket probably dates from the third Amphitheatre building that stood from 1804-1841.This had the largest stage in England. Immense platforms running the length supported galloping horsemen and carriages and could be lowered or raised mechanically.
