Finger ring, posy ring
A plain gold posy ring with a D-sectioned hoop inscribed internally in cursive script 'God for mee appointed thee' with the maker's mark 'WC' in black letter in a rectangular punch.
This posy ring was probably made by William Coles who was made Free of the Goldsmiths' Company on 7th December 1722. His mark was entered as a smallworker on 5th August 1724 and is recorded on mourning rings dated 1731 and 1732. He was still working in 1764. See A G Grimwade 'London Goldsmiths 1697-1837', London, 1990, p 468 and mark no. 3076. See also Mark Emanuel, 'The Surviving Rings of the Serjeants at Law', London, 2008 (privately printed). See also posy ring number 62.4/39 in the Museum of London's collection with a similar, possibly variant, mark. For rings with the same or variant versions see Dr Joan Evans 'English Posies and Posy Rings', Oxford, 1931 p 41.
