Social History — 1821-1870
Printing plate
This printing plate would have been used to print portraits that would have been sold for a penny to be tinselled. Portraits of actors in character were popular theatrical souveniers. Decorating such portraits with tinsel ornaments purchased for the purpose was a popular past-time. Publishers such as J.K. Green issued runs of theatrical portraits such as this. This portrait features characters from Richard III. Characters wearing armour were popular for tinselling because of the metal details in their costume.
