Social History
Boundary mark
Boundary marks were placed on walls and set into pavements to represent the limits of a parish's jurisdiction. Physical markers distinguishing one parish from another were important to clarify parochial responsibility for street paving, lighting and cleaning. Marks on buildings were typically attached at first floor level. This mark is from the parish of St Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury in the City of London.
