Social History — C. 1981
Badge, lapel badge
Badges like this one are issued by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) to new members upon joining the organisation. CND was formed at a public meeting in London in February 1958. Its founding members included the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the writer J.B. Priestley.
The movement underwent a massive resurgence in the 1980s as the United States stationed nuclear Cruise missiles on British soil. CND was able to organise some of the largest demonstrations in British history with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets of London in protest at nuclear weapons.
The badge features the classic CND 'ban the bomb' logo which has become an internationally recognised symbol of peace. The logo was designed for CND by the artist Gerald Holtum in 1958.
