During the 1980s, 170 local authorities in the UK declared themselves to be 'Nuclear Free'. in an attempt to influence government defence policy and protest against spending on nuclear power and arms.
In London the Greater London Council encouraged London's residents and local authorities to campaign against the transport of nuclear waste on London's rail network.
