Social History — 1981
Badge, lapel badge
During the 1980s many inner London boroughs had powerful left-wing Constituency Labour Parties. This badge was produced by activists in Hackney for the Greater London Council (GLC) elections of May 1981. These were the last elections to take place before the abolition of the GLC in 1986. In the event Labour won the elections and Ken Livingstone became leader of the GLC.
This badge was purchased for 20p by a member of the Museum of London's staff at the People's March for Jobs rally at Hyde Park in May 1981. The march began in Liverpool and climaxed in London with a rally of 150, 000 people. Marchers slept in the headquarters of the GLC at County Hall.
