Social History — C. 1910
Trunk
Upright trunk, with wooden beading, manufactured by Moedler of Leipzig, c. 1910. The trunk, when open, is divided into two areas, one half contains nine drawers of differing sizes and the other half is designed for hanging clothes. The trunk is inscribed 'Dr AS', the initials of Alice Seelig, the owner of the trunk. Alice, who came from a middle class Jewish family in Dresden, first used the trunk when she left home to study medicine. In April 1939 she and her family made plans to escape Nazi Germany and travel to England. As they fled, the Nazis seized many of their possessions, and the Seeligs arrived in London with only this trunk containing everyday essentials, some objects to sell, photographs, and a prayer book.
Once settled as refugees In London the family struggled to find work. Alice worked as a cook before her medical qualifications were recognised.
