Housing Development, Catford, c. 1880
This housing development advertisement provides information relating to houses for let or sale. Much suburban housing of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was built speculatively. Companies built so quickly that buyers often had a great deal of choice and competition kept prices low. This advertisement outlines the features most important to those looking to buy or lease a house: good transport links, a healthy environment, spacious properties, private gardens and surrounding open countryside. Renting was far more common than home-ownership.
