Uniform, fireman's cap
Fire insurance companies employed sailors and watermen as fire-fighters. Their fire-fighting skills, especially the use of ropes and ladders, were highly prized. This fireman's red worsted cap for the Hand-in-Hand Fire Office was adapted from that worn by licensed watermen.
