Dignitaries during the South Bank Exhibition opening
This photograph was taken by Henry Grant, and shows dignitaries at the opening of the South Bank Exhibition for the Festival of Britain on 4 May 1951. The party includes the Prime Minister Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill. Attlee had hoped that the Festival would influence the public vote in his favour at the general election in October 1951.Ultimately however Labour lost, and Churchill's victorious Conservative government cleared the South Bank site once the Festival was over.
