The Transport Pavilion under construction, South Bank
This image shows an exhibit being installed in the Transport Pavilion at the South Bank Exhibition for the Festival of Britain, 1951. It is a Supermarine S.6B seaplane, described as 'the fastest vehicle on earth'. In September 1931 it set a world air speed record of 407.5 miles an hour during the Schneider Trophy. Its designer Reginald Mitchell, also created the Spitfire. The wings had to be removed in order to manouevre it into position in the Air section of the pavilion.
