Printed Ephemera — 1873
The scamp
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'The Scamp' with lyrics by Henry Pettitt and music by Lance Major. This song was popularised by Gilbert Hastings MacDermott. The colour chromolithographed cover includes a portrait of the singer dressed in character as a Scamp.
MacDermott was born in Islington in 1845. The son of Irish parents he became one of the most popular music hall artistes, particularly famed for his rendition of the pro-war song that introduced the word 'jingo' into the English language with the chorus 'We don't want to fight but by jingo if we do, We've got the ships, we've got the men, and got the money too. Similarly to his fellow Lions Comiques, The Great MacDermott was known for his fashionable dress that parodied the wealthy 'swells' and 'toffs' of the age.
