Printed Ephemera — 1876-1889
Three nice old ladies
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'Three nice old ladies went to the Aquarium' written and composed by F. Gilbert Esq. and sung by Fred Coyne. The lithographed cover designed by Alfred Concanen is printed with a portrait of the singer Fred Coyne holding a song sheet.
The Royal Aquarium referred to in the song opened in Westminster in 1876. As well as 13 aquarium tanks the venue included a live music performance space, reading and smoking rooms, an art gallery and ice rink. Although hugely popular the Aquarium tanks soon developed operational problems and the venue quickly developed a reputation as a place where unaccompanied women came in search of male companionship.
