Printed Ephemera — 1883
The Belle of Eaton Square
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'The Belle of Eaton Square' or 'I bought her a carriage and pair' written and composed by Joseph Tabra.
This music hall song was popularised by Alfred, The Great Vance one of the fashionable 'swells' of the music hall, known collectively as the Lions Comiques. Along with George Leybourne and Arthur Lloyd, The Great Vance was particularly known for singing about fashionable locations such as the Zoological Gardens and, in this case the wealthy area of Eaton Square. Most famous for parodying 'swells' and upper class 'toffs' the fashionable evening dress of the Lions Comiques performers contrasted greatly with the cloth-cap coster cockney image adopted by many other music hall performers.
