Printed Ephemera — C.1869
Belgravia
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'Belgravia' with words by Walter Greenaway and music by Vincent Davies.
This music hall song was popularised by the The Great Vance one of the fashionable 'swells' of the music hall, known collectively as the Lions Comiques. Along with George Leybourne and Arthur Lloyd, The Great Vance was particularly known for singing about fashionable locations such as the Zoological Gardens and, in this case the area of Belgravia. Most famous for parodying 'swells' and upper class 'toffs' the fashionable evening dress of the Lions Comiques performers contrasted greatly with the cloth-cap coster cockney image adopted by many other music hall performers.
