Printed Ephemera — C. 1865
London Lions
Sheet music for the popular comic music hall song 'London Lions' or 'We fly by night and won't go home till morning' written and sung by Harry Liston. The colour chromolithographed cover is illustrated with a portrait of Harry Liston dressed typically as a 'swell or 'toff' carrying a walking stick.
Harry Liston was one of the Lions Comiques of the London music hall. Most famous for parodying 'swells' and upper class 'toffs' the fashionable evening dress of the Lions Comiques performers contrasted greatly with the cloth-cap coster cockney image adopted by many other music hall performers.
