Printed Ephemera — 1870-1886
Oh, I say!
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'Oh, I say!' or 'He does the heavy in the City', written and composed by Herbert Cole. The song was popularised by Nelly Power. The colour chromolithographed cover is printed with a portrait of Nelly wearing a man's overcoat.
Nelly Power was born in London in 1854. Performing in London's music halls from the age of 8 years old her most famous song was 'The boy I love is up in the Gallery'. One of the first female performers to dress and impersonate a man on stage, as depicted on the song sheet cover, Nelly tragically died in 1887 aged just 32.
