The Key
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Key, on a street in Covent Garden, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 746A; Obv inscription: [....]D.WADE.AT.THE.IN = a key (in field); Rev inscription: [....]STREET.COVEN.GARDEN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = E.M.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The inscription on the token is worn, and having no comparable example, it hasn't been possible to complete the reading, and therefore the name of the issuer and the location of issue. Covent Garden lies in the London borough of Camden, and the City of Westminster, having formerly been part of Middlesex.
