Printed Ephemera — 1851-1870
Card, valentine card
Handfinished, multilayered valentine's card formed lace paper and applied decoration. Applied to a backing sheet is a coloured print of sailing barges, possibly on the River Thames. Framing this image is a white lace paper border embossed with floral decoration, applied to the backing sheet with paper springs or hinges to give a three dimensional effect. Above the border is applied a wreath of blue cotton flowers and, in the centre, is applied a 'cut out' coloured chromolighographed scrap relief of cupid holding a dove.
