Decorative arts — 1750-1800
Pot
Delftware was manufactured in London from the late 16th century, but the name did not come into common usage until the early 18th century. A reference to the Dutch city of Delft, the term describes earthenware with a lead glaze to which tin oxide has been added. The majority of London delftware was manufactured in Lambeth and Southwark. Small pots like this one were mass produced. Drugs, ointments and dentifrice were sold in these pots which typically had paper lids bearing the vendor's name. This one contained dentifrice and would have been sold by a chemist or a dentist.
