The Riot in Broad Street on 7 June 1780
This print shows the house of a rich Irishman named Donovan during the Gordon riots. The riots were sparked off by Lord George Gordon protesting against the Roman Catholic Relief Act, which ended severe discrimination against Catholics. Gordon led a crowd of thousands to the Houses of Parliament, carrying a petition to demand that the law should be changed back. In the rioting that followed, Catholic homes and churches in London suffered serious damage.
