Printed Ephemera — 1851-1860
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a cobbler smoking a pipe. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse, 'You keep Saint Mondon with much glee, To-morrow pennyless you'll be, And with awl and hammer strain, To collect some brads again, So by your sole, I don't incline, To be a Crispin Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
