Printed Ephemera — 1860-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a demon dressed in a topcoat, hiding his tail under his clothing. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse, 'Though you're a gay seducing devil, You need not think to win my smile, I'm proof against such tempting evil, Your Cash will never me beguile, Your tongue so oily, soft and smooth, Disgusts me quite, I can't abide it, Besides your tail, to tell the truth, I've seen, although you strive to hide it.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
