Printed Ephemera — 1850-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a large foot striking the seat of a man in plaid trousers. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse 'Look sharp, the old man wears a thirteen shoe, With soles a full inch thick, and stout ones too. He can outkick a mule, and as for strength, He'll lift you with each kick your measured length. He hates young spooneys, as he does the bees, So keep away, if you would sit at ease. For if he lands his hoof on your back-stay, You'll have no use for chairs, for many a day.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'.
