Lead, seal impression, bulla
Papal bulla of Pope Innocent VI (1352-62) from the grave of a woman in the cemetery of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Spital. The bulla was found in the woman's right hand. She was buried next to the charnel house. The lead seals like this one come from documents called 'indulgences'. Issued by the Pope, these were believed to reduce the time the dead person's soul had to spend in Purgatory.
