Printed Ephemera — 1850-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a corrupt grocer. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse 'You call yourself a "business man," And cheat the public when you can. You try to sell them rotten cheese, You grind your coffee up with peas, Your sugar too you mix with sand. You counterfeit each decent brand, Of ham or flour, short weight you give, And rob the poor, yourself to live.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
