Printed Ephemera — 1860-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a man made of flowers. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'About you it is plainly seen, That there is always something green, Your head is like a pot of mould As full of dirt as I've been told; Of the flowers that you're most like, The Dandelion first doth strike; You have its sickly yellow hue, And likewise stink as nasty too, And of that flower it is said It much affects your acts in bed, In Bed I much suspect tis true That that is all that you can do.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
