Printed Ephemera — 1840-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a man surrounded by a cloud of flies. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'The type of ugliness are you, Enough to frighten all who view Thy hideous measley-looking face; Indeed your's is a hopeless case. Go to the "Land o' Cakes" again, For all your sighing is in vain; No maid her fate will with yours entwine, You sawney, ugly Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
