Social History — C. 1982
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was issued by the National and Local Government Officers' Association (NALGO) in the early 1980s. NALGO was a trade union originally known as the National Association of Local Government Officers. The union was formed in 1905 at the Inns of Court Hotel on High Holborn.
NALGO began life as a friendly society rather than a trade union and did not affiliate to the Trade Union Congress until 1964. The union did not take industrial action until 1970 and never affiliated to the Labour Party. The slogan 'Stop the Cuts' illustrates trade union opposition to Margaret Thatcher's government's public sector spending cuts. The Museum of London acquired this badge from the union's publicity department in 1982.
