Printed Ephemera — 1850-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a man with hammer and chisel. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'Chip, chip, you lazy old drone, With a heart like lead, and a head like stone, Do you think I am incline To have a stone-smasher for my Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'.
