Printed Ephemera — 1824-1841
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a fabric 'dyer' smoking a pipe. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'Mister Dyer, do you really think, that I Have any inclination for to die; Or do you think I am inclin'd to loll, For nights and days upon your ugly pole? Your copperas nose oft fills me with surprise, There's nothing so disgraceful as your Dyes; Then Mister Logwood, caution take in time, A Dyer shall not be my Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'.
