Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising a cream lace paper undersheet embossed with a floral border surrounding a panel of cream satin. Attached above by paper hinges is a silver and white lace paper border which also frames the satin panel. Applied to the satin panel is a coloured print of a young woman surrounded by a gilded frame, two embossed paper 'scrap' garlands, a garland of cotton leaves and a pink flower with a paper scroll printed 'Guess where I came frome' and a silver and white embossed image of an angel and cherub figures in a conch shell boat pulled by swans which flaps down to reveal a garland of coloured, fabric flowers and paper leaves. One of a collection of cards stored within a scrapbook compiled by Jonathan King numbered 'Volume 1166'.
