Printed Ephemera — 1850-1865
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card comprising a top sheet of silver and white lace paper perforated and embossed with a design representing a garden scene with trees, foliage, a classical gazebo and a pair of classical lovers embracing. Above the figures is a cut out roundel through which can be seen a rice paper panel, applied to the inner sheet beneath, handpainted with a lakeside and waterfall scene. The card is also decorated with a small applied garland of pressed satin and coloured paper leaves, flowers and an embossed silver paper fountain. Beneath the lace paper is a sheet of blue tissue paper inserted to enhance the lace paper decoration. One of a collection of cards stored within a scrapbook compiled by Jonathan King numbered 'Volume 1166'.
