Tallis's London street views : No. 73. Parliament Street
Issue number 73 of Tallis's 'London street views' showing nos. 1-55 Parliament Street. At nos. 12 and 13 is Stephenson's public library. Free public libraries developed in Britain as a result of the Public Libraries Act of 1850, Prior to that date circulating or subscription libraries fulfilled the book requirements of the public, whereby a set amount of books could be borrowed on payment of a subscription. Libraries such as Stephenson's often had associated means of making money, such as by selling books or stationery.
