Printed Ephemera — 1856-1862
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card formed from two sheets of lace paper attached one above the other by paper springs to give a raised effect. The undersheet is of white lace paper with a floral design surrounding a central oval panel of red silk. Applied to the panel is an embossed paper image of cupid firing an arrow towards a garden gazebo. The top sheet is part gilded and incorporates an embossed design of flowers and drapes. The central area is open revealing the silk panel below. This top border is decorated with applied paper and cotton leaves and flowers.
