Printed Ephemera — 1855-1860
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising an undersheet of cream lace paper by Kershaw heavily embossed with an image, at the bottom of the card, representing two lovers reclining on a riverbank. In the centre of the sheet is a cream satin panel decorated with an applied, cut out paper figure of a flying angel holding aloft a wreath. Above and beneath her are rice paper clouds. The image is framed by a wreath of applied pink paper roses and leaves of coiled wire covered with green plush and tied with a cream satin bow. The panel is surrounded by a top layer of silver and white lace paper perforated and embossed to represent a classical garden with figures and a mini gazebo.
