Museum of London Archaeology Service — Late Medieval; late 15th - early 16th century
Lead, lead alloy, chalice
Recent excavations on the cemetery site of the priory and hospital of St Mary Spital in Spitalfields has revealed over 7,000 graves of hospital patients, monks, nuns and benefactors. Archaeologists were able to identify the bodies of three priests because they were buried with vessels used to celebrate the Mass. This lead chalice and paten, now partially fused by corrosion, was found lying across the lower jaw and neck of one of the priests. Wax chalices and patens were also made for priest's burials, but if any were placed in graves at Spitalfields they have long since perished.
