Decorative arts — C. 1765
Jug, helmet-shaped jug
Helmet-shaped jug decorated with geometric flat cutting on large flattened knop with tear. Domed and faceted foot with scalloped edge (chipped). Applied handle with two rows of facets. The jug is similar to one shown on the trade card of Hopton Hanson and Stafford of the Whitefriars glasshouse in around 1759. Betts, who died in 1765, is mentioned as a customer in the early glasshouse archives (held by the City of London). He was a glass cutter, so would have bought blank vessels from glasshouses and added decoration. His probate inventory mentions jugs of this type in several colours.
Part of the Garton Collection of English Glass, presented in memory of the late Sir Richard Garton, GBE, by his daughters and grandchildren.
