A collection of the favourite songs sung this summer in Vauxhall Gardens
This book contains a range of songs sung at Vauxhall Gardens in the late 18th century. The singers include Mrs Frederika Weichsel, Miss Jameson, Miss Cowper and Mr Vernon. The music has been set by John Worgan, a London-born organist and composer. One of songs is titled 'The Negroes Complaint', a famous poem by the abolitionist William Cowper. However, the the lyrics printed here are not those of 'The Negroes Complaint' but 'Wide o'er the tremulous sea', another abolitionist poem.
