Armband
Green cotton armband worn by a volunteer assisting with the evacuation of London's school children during World War II. Issued by the London County Council it is printed with the Council's coat of arms and the inscription 'L.C.C./EVAC' Beneath is handwritten the unique identifying number issued to the wearer.'IV' 365'.
Preparations for the evacuation of children, young mothers and vulnerable adults from 'danger zones' began in 1938. Although co-ordinated nationally by the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education, the main responsibility for implementing the evacuation scheme fell on local councils, including the London County Council.
