Printed Ephemera — 1830-05-10
Mademoiselle Rozier as Colombine
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actress Mademoiselle Rozier in the role of Colombine. Published May 10th, 1830, such portraits would have been sold plain for 1d for colouring and tinselling at home. The portrait is signed in ink: 'JHB Zdzienicki', this probably refers to the colourist.
Columbine was one of the main roles in the harlequinade: a short comic play performed after a longer, more serious drama. The characters were all stylised and the audience would have known the characters immediately. The harlequniade and pantomime were both parts of the same performance, although only the pantomime is still staged.
